Happy March folks (or just me). I hate going a few days without posting, but I don’t have my tablet here to draw with or anything. Instead, I’ll write about my current favorite musical form: fusion, or acid jazz, depending on how you call it. Not much to say about it, other than I love it to death. My favorites are easily Weather Report and Jaco Pastorius’ solo efforts. The common factor here is the bass. I love the bass guitar, always have. In an ongoing drive to broaden my horizons, I’ve decided to start trying to play it a bit, but I don’t think I really have the talent for it or anything. Dad certainly does, so maybe I inherited some? Probably not. I’ve also been thinking about the keyboard a bit, but not as much as the bass. Composition in general is just amazing to me, and anyone who can play an instrument is just inspiring. Those who can play multiple instruments and write ridiculous amounts are beyond even that.

Not sure what I’m going to do for the next couple of days. I guess practice bass more, and rent something from the local Redbox until Tuesday, and then get SFxT.

This is what happens when you drink and draw. I’m sure if you have talent it results in art, but I’m not so sure about this.

Today is Leap Day. That means this post won’t have a first anniversary for four whole years. That’s okay I suppose. Spring Break has begun for me more or less, headed back home for a while. I’ve already said that haven’t I? Well uh, I got bored and jailbroke my iPhone just to dick around with it, so that’s been fun. Oh, and new awful header image, yes. I think I can randomize them, so I’ll probably just start sketching a whole boatload of ‘em, and you can amuse yourself trying to see them all. Or at least appease me.

Thinking of cool weapon ideas for my robot. I like module style set ups, so having big silly looking thrown together weapons could be cool. I’m imagining this set up used to pull opponents or nearby scenery around, or if it’s powered enough and done against a big enough foe, used to grapple. Or it can stab with the big metal slab. Looks crude, which is why I like it. I need to come up with some ways to make it look…poorer I guess is the word. Like, put together in a scrapyard with love, poorer.

Spring Break starts for me at the end of this week. I’m taking my tablet, but I doubt I’ll draw as much. I’m pretty easily distracted back home (and everywhere). Don’t really have any feelings for today. Took a test, took a long long nap (never happens) and quickly drew this. That’s about all I’ve done.

I’m not 100% happy with the designs yet, but they’re getting there. Science girl and Scaredy cat boy need tweaks, so I’ll keep at it. It’s weird. I know this project isn’t going anywhere, but I keep working at it. I haven’t drawn anything that I would actually bother inking yet, that’s why it’s constantly sketches on here. I’m pretty bothered by this fact, but I’m more intimidated by inking, and beyond that coloring. The very notion makes my heart sink.

Had a test earlier today, that went better than expected. Test tomorrow probably won’t. Eh, what can you do? Spring Break is coming up soon, and I’m way too focused on being home again, ideally learning to play some bass, working on my drawings, and working.

Today’s batch of poorly drawn things is mostly sketchwork done for that mechanic comic I can’t get out of my mind. It’ll be three young adults, I guess college age. The first will be a shorter (but not as short as pictured, that’s a much cartoonier test doodle), bitchier scientist. She designs stuff. The second is her best friend, a tall, sweet mechanic girl who loves all machines, and knows them inside and out. She’s a terrible pilot though. The final is a huge boy that is kidnapped to test pilot their latest machine. He looks intimidating because of his size (inherited from his police chief dad, sketched), but he’s a bit of a sheltered scaredy cat. He can pilot surprisingly well though when motivated. The group works out of a local scrap yard, hobbling together a giant robot, just because. From the get go, the machine won’t look like it does pictured above, but it’ll get there over time.

I don’t have any names for any of them, or the machine. All of them need to be tweaked pretty bad, there’s just something missing, especially on the boy. He’s too plain. Something…I can’t figure it out right now. Oh well. Today was good over all, pretty productive, all considering.

If it has a red bar over its head, it’ll be dead momentarily. Yes, even the wolves, tigers and pandas. Dian Wei doesn’t discriminate here. In related news, the Vita is awesome.

No drawings today, because I really need to stop playing this game and study for a test tomorrow morning. I did want to test the screenshot utility before that though, so here we are. I’ll try to do some more later, and maybe a more formal review of the game and perhaps the hardware?  Who knows. Gotta stop playing it first.

Today’s first doodle was a challenge from Walter to make a “perfect” drawing from a random shape he drew. From there it became the upper half of the breastplate for a half giraffe/half lady warrior thing. It wasn’t perfect. The second is concept work for my mechanic comic idea. I hate the first, am okay with the second, and actually like the third a lot.
The digital sketch is based on a game idea I had earlier where you play as an elite ninja. It’s too easy to do missions without handicaps, so you take ninja dares to make them harder, like wearing little or really bright clothing, or other dumb stuff like that. Basically, I want a comedic Tenchu that’s more action-y and cartoony.
Idea work aside, today was okay I guess. Tomorrow is the Vita, which I’ll do a post for undoubtedly, and the next two days afterwards carry big ol’ tests. Gonna be nasty until the week’s over.

I’d really like to do a full comic about robot mechanics. The more I think about it, the more fun it would be to do. I think I’ll keep working at this design (the girl in the bottom right), and try to come up with a plot for it. I doubt it’ll go anywhere, but prototyping is fun at least. On that note, maybe another update today, who knows? I really should use a tumblr for this or something.

Critiques for today: I really need to work on my faces and head shapes from different angles. I’m actually kinda happy with everything else for once. That doesn’t happen often. Oh, and hand proportions, now that I look at it. Augh.

Notebook Sketches II (up to 2/17/12)

Back again with a mess of stuff I do in class rather than actually pay attention. Why yes, I have been reading a fair amount of manga in my free time of late, why do you ask?

My favorite is probably the mechanic one. That was an awesome dream. I’d love to watch a show about the mechanic crew that works on the giant robots. If I had bucket loads of talent, I’d try to make that happen.

I don’t really enjoy Valentine’s Day. Surprise. Sometimes I feel like the Grinch about it, only instead of having my heart grow three sizes, it just hastens its merry way to failure via suffocation.

Some girl always appears in my dreams now. I’ve never met her anywhere, or seen her outside of them. I’ve never seen her face, even in the dreams. It’s weird. Nothing sexual, just enigmatic I guess.

I got work done today, just not way too much. Still busy busy tomorrow, and I guess nothing over the weekend since D&D was cancelled. I need hobbies, video games, anime and reading are rarely satisfying anymore.
